The exhibition Life Eternal
On October 1, the Nobel Prize Museum opened its new exhibition, Life Eternal, at the Liljevalchs art gallery in Stockholm. The exhibition combined science, art, and cultural history to present varied perspectives on eternity, explored critical issues of the era, and offered a message of hope for the future.
The Life Eternal exhibition aimed to reflect on questions surrounding eternity and the future, responding to an increasingly urgent need for new ways to discuss the direction of humanity’s journey. The Nobel Prize was positioned as a key influence in these conversations.
The exhibition highlighted various topics, challenging visitors to reflect on aging, the possibility of halting it, and the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on our lives and societies. Other sections explored whether life after death or parallel worlds might exist. One room delved into the motivations of individuals who risk their lives for higher purposes.
At Liljevalchs, visitors could sit at the desks of several Nobel Prize laureates to explore their creative processes. One highlighted laureate was Marie Curie, who isolated pure radium—a breakthrough that enabled radiation therapy to treat cancer but also carried risks. Curie’s life ended due to a blood disease likely caused by her exposure to radiation. At Desmond Tutu’s desk, visitors could listen to testimonies from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which he led to help South Africa heal after apartheid.
The exhibition also featured new works by artists Mark Dion, Niki Lindroth von Bahr, and Christian Partos. Sculptor Oscar Nilsson contributed a piece inspired by the humanoid Josie from Klara and the Sun, the 2021 novel by Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro.
The book Eternal Life
The book Eternal Life is a unique art project that was exhibited at the Liljevalchs Art Gallery in Stockholm from October 1, 2022, to January 29, 2023. It was created by the bookbinder and artist Lars Hedelin in collaboration with screenwriter Ulf Peter Hallberg. Together with a team of 14 craftsmen and experts in bookbinding, printing, and calligraphy, they developed a book that became an outstanding example of artisanal book art.
The purpose of Eternal Life was to create an artistic tribute to the book as an object and as a vessel of human history and culture, in a time when digitalization has transformed how we read and gather knowledge. The book is both a physical and spiritual journey that explores themes of time, memory, and the human yearning for immortality. It includes stories and texts by authors such as Carl Jonas Love Almqvist and Rainer Maria Rilke, with manuscripts complemented by calligraphy and illustrations.
The project also carries a philosophical undertone, as Eternal Life poses questions about what can be preserved for the future and what risks being lost. It emerges as a book that is not only read but experienced as a total artwork, where the choice of materials and design reflect a timeless beauty and a celebration of the book's physical existence.
Paper and print
Eternal Life was printed on the exclusive Olin Design Regular Nordic White paper. This paper was chosen for its high quality, durability, and natural white tone, which provides a clear and elegant presentation of the text and illustrations. Olin Design Regular is renowned for its smooth surface and excellent printing properties, enhancing both the typographic art and image details in the book.
